Boddington's Pub Ale

Why I tried this: I love Boddington's. Especially when it's on draft. Went to World of Beer UCF and found out today was my lucky day!

Smell: Smells a bit yeasty. Other than that, it really doesn't give up that much. Not very exciting if you enjoy a good smell.

Taste: It was a medium bodied, smooth, creamy rush. Boddington's goes down so smooth and just has such a pleasant earthy taste that it's hard not to like. It finishes off slightly bitter, but nothing that detracts from the initial taste.

On a scale of 1 to 10 I would give Boddington's an 8/10. The beer is just a pleasure to drink. The taste is moderate but enjoyable. The mouth feel and drinkability is where this beer really shines. I'd rate it higher, but the lack of a pleasing smell drags it down a tad. Should be a beer anyone can enjoy, though.

Butterbeer

Why I tried this: Because this is Harry Potter and his friend's drink of choice, they are wizards. I figured they would know a thing or two about drinks. I thought maybe if I drank this I could get a broomstick and fly around, but unfortunately all the broomsticks at Harry Potter Universal are cheap hollow plastic.

Smell: Has a butterscotchy and subtle marshmallow scent, very sweet smelling.

Taste: When you take your first sip you get through the thick head of the drink. The thick head is very very sweet and tastes like a butterscotch marshmallow mixture of some kind. After the head hits you get to the cool liquid that is creamy tasting and very fizzy. The drink is smooth and refreshing but very sweet and sugary.

On a scale of 1 to 10 I would give Butterbeer an 8/10. It is refreshing and delicious but it does not count towards the goal of 500. Additionally, there is no alcohol in butterbeer so maybe after 15 you could get a pretty awesome sugar rush but that's about it. Also, it just tastes like a delicious top head added to cream soda. They lose points for lack of creativity. Harry Potter land at Universal all in all does look pretty awesome though.

Delirium Tremens

Why I tried this: When World of Beer first opened I found myself absolutely floored by the amazing selection on hand, and while I had already put a few hundred different brews under my belt I was still a little flabbergasted as to where I should start. Luckily a neon sign sat in the corner, quietly proclaiming with a pink glow that Delirium Tremens was voted World's Best Beer in the 1998 World Beer Championship. I put that medal to the test.

Smell: The initial smell of this beer is a nice sweet smell, immediately followed by a spicy yeast note that is common in many Belgian style brews. There's also a slight smell of pear, clove, and the slightest hint of citrus. There's no discernible hop smell, and the aroma is really quite pleasant.

Taste: Wow. Just wow. This beer is extremely flavorful, starting out with a nice mild sweetness to it, but accented with a thin malt flavor. You can definitely get a bit of clove, pear, and banana. Towards the end you can definitely get a spicier flavor fromm the Belgian Yeast, which is balanced out by a slight bitter from the hops. Really just an all around amazing taste by my palate.

On a scale of 1 to 10 I'd give this a 9.5. This beer is an extremely complex Belgian, and by my count is deserving of the award it was given. Hands down this is my favorite Belgian, without a doubt, and is ranked in at least my top 5 for favorite beers, if not my favorite outright. The only reason I hesitate to give it a 10 is because this is something that the "uninitiated" in beer culture might find a bit too complex, and weighing in with an 8.5% ABV might be a bit too strong for the newbies out there.

This beer is definitely pretty good. A sweetness with a balance of hops, nothing too overpowering. Smells a bit of bananas, but finishes with a taste of clove. Definitely very nice, not something I could have a few of though.

I'd give it an 8.5/10.

Blue Point Toasted Lager

Why I tried this: After coming across someone talking about Blue Point Brewery on twitter,(twitter.com/beeruken) I decided to message their twitter account.(http://twitter.com/BluePointBrewer) I went to the World of Beer website and saw they carried it so I decided I had to give it a shot.  Hopefully I can meet more and more brewery's like this that can recommend their delicious beer to me.  I thought this was pretty sweet.

Smell: Sweet malty scent with a slight fruity/citrusy scent

Taste: I thought the taste was very well aligned with the scent.  The beer was very well rounded and the flavors worked together great.  The malt flavor and citrus/fruit hop flavor worked together great and gave this beer a smooth easy finish.  I haven't seen this beer anywhere before but if I saw it while out somewhere I would probably get it again for sure.

I would give this beer an 8 out of 10.  This beer has a smooth clean easy finish and all the flavors work together really well.  I will absolutely be trying their other beer that WoB carries the Rastafa Rye the next time I am there. The Toasted Lager has a pretty original flavor that separates it from many lagers available at your typical bar.

Tilburg's Dutch Brown Ale

Why I tried this: A customer at work had recommended this to me a while back. After picking up a pack of it, I was pretty pleased. When I saw it on the World of Beer list, I decided Jon and I needed a round. Look at how thankful he was for that!

Smell: Has the aroma of your typical brown ale, with roasted malts and a bit of toffee for a slight sweetness. Quite nice.

Taste: Has a malty and slightly sweet characteristic to it, which I think might be a bit of brown sugar and toffee. It's similar to a Newcastle, but with a sweetness and smoothness that is unmatched by other brown ales. There's no foul aftertaste or anything out of place here, just pure goodness.

On a scale of 1 to 10 I'd give this an 8.5. The smell of the beer is fairly typical, but the taste is very good, especially for a brown ale. The price isn't that bad either. The beer is visually pleasing, pouring a nice thick brown with a solid white head. It's easy to drink and stands out enough that I'd definitely get it again, and highly recommend it!

Fuller's London Porter

Why I tried this: London Porter has long since been a favorite of mine. As far as porters go, this one shines above the rest. I saw it in the beer list at World of Beer, and I haven't had it there yet, so it was a logical choice.

Smell: Smells of earthy roasted malts with coffee overtones. Very nice.

Taste: An explosion of earthy, roasted malts hits you as you begin your sip of this beer. This follows by a slight transition into a chocolate and coffee finish, all the while holding that strong roasted malt flavor. It doesn't let up all the way down. Simply delicious.

On a scale of 1 to 10 I would give this a 9. Hands down, this is the best porter I've ever had. It has a full bodied flavor that never gives when it finishes. Heavy, thick, very roasted, and not for the light hearted who would like a moderate tasting or easy drinking lighter beer. The smell is incredible, the taste more so, and the beer just looks damn sexy in a pint glass. You can't go wrong if you're into dark beers.

50 down! Cheers to another 50! (then 8 more 50's!)

Ridin like fitty when I hit fifty beers the other day at World of Beer. I went to check out and only had 49 so figured I'd toss that final guy on right there. Was there with a bunch of friends throughout the trip: Jeff (of course), Scott, Kristy (Jeff's new wife), and Mike. I decided to add pictures from the trip below. This puts me at 10% of the goal. It's been a fun trip so far and there is still a whole lot to go.

We have done a pretty good job of drinking beer and keeping up which doesn't surprise me. We have also been really on top of updates just about every day which DOES surprise me, so check back often and send us any suggestions or requests!

Ace Perry Cider

Why I tried this: Despite my love of beer, I'm also a huge fan of cider. I've had ciders from Ace before, notably Ace Joker, but always came away disappointed. Would this one be different? It was on draft, so I decided to find out.

Smell: Smelled as you'd imagine, like apples. There was a subtle pear scent as well. Not much else to it, it's a cider.

Taste: This cider has the most crisp and balanced taste I've ever had. It's moderately sweet, and very light to drink. It's almost refreshing. The pear flavor makes its way in there, letting the apple taste do most of the work, but adding enough to make itself relevant. Honestly, I was pretty blown away.

On a scale of 1 to 10 I would give this a 9. Hands down, this is the best cider I've ever enjoyed. I mean, look at my picture. It looks like I'm in heaven. There's really not much else to say. Unless you're a big fan of more bitter ciders, I'd strongly recommend this. You can probably get your wife to try this with you, too.

Grimbergen Dubbel

Why I tried this: I had the Grimbergen Blonde and loved it so I decided to give the Grimbergen Dubbel a taste.  It came in a bottle much like the Blonde and I even got the officially logo'd Grimbergen glass this time.  I drank this while Jeff drank the Grimbergen Blonde that I recommended to him.

Smell: Peppery, yeasty, alcohol scent.  Much different than the blonde and much less pleasant.

Taste: slight malty yeasty flavor up front that was quickly overpowered.  I want to say it was almost an alcohol flavor or something I cant explain, but it came in strong.  That flavor stuck around and made this beer mediocre for me.  As I was drinking this I was really jealous watching Jeff sip on that delicious blonde ale.  That overpowering flavor completely made this beer one dimensional for me.

On a scale of 1 to 10 I would give this a 6.5.  I know this beer has a lot of great reviews everywhere but I did not find it smooth and enjoyable at all.  The first second of your sip is ok but what the flavor quickly fades into made this beer pretty un-enjoyable for me.
