St. Peter's Old Style Porter

Why I tried this: Was talking with someone at the bar at WOB (sorry I forgot your name, I was fairly drunk!) and he recommended me to try anything from St. Peter's brewery. We were discussing it with the bartenders and they suggested I try the Old Style Porter. Sorry for the poor lightning picture, but you get the idea. It's a porter.

Smell: Mostly of roasted malts and a slight bit of coffee. Very pleasant, and better than your average porter.

Taste: The first thing I noticed about this beer while tasting it was how creamy and smooth it was. There was a definite strong roasted malt flavor, combined with coffee, or perhaps even toffee, as there was a slight sweetness to it which was really nice. Highly enjoyable all the way down.

Overall, I'm going to give St. Peter's Old Style Porter an empty pint glass award. This was one damn smooth porter. Normally you get an overpowered roasted malt and coffee flavor from your porters, but not this one. The flavor is strong, but extremely well balanced. I really liked the slight sweetness, which really helped said balance. I'd recommend this beer to anyone that likes a dark beer.

Left Hand Fade to Black Volume 2

Why I tried this: Kyle was on a roll that night, pretty much recommending me every delicious porter under the sun, and then some. Left Hand's Fade to Black Vol. 2 was the "and then some."

Smell: Deep, dark roasted malts, with a note of coffee.

Taste: Exquisite. Bet you thought you'd never see that word describe a beer. The taste was intensely roasted and malty. The interesting thing, though, is that you get a bit of a smoked flavor, which is a first that I've had in a porter. Finishing off this taste is a hint of chocolate. It's dark, complex, and just incredibly tasty.

Left Hand has made another knockout beer in my opinion. The smoked nature of this beer makes this one of the more interesting porters I've tried, and that's a good thing, because after a while it's hard to make your beer stand out. At a moderately alcoholic 7.8%, you couldn't taste the alcohol in the beer at all. The flavor is just incredibly rich, and overall the beer just supremely enjoyable. I'd give this beer an empty glass award, and would recommend this beer any time anyone asks for a good porter.

Old Slug Porter

Why I tried this: It was another night of going down the list for me. The evening was nice, and I wanted a porter. I had just finished up with Old Engine Oil, and wanted to keep the good porter times rolling. Old Slug was next on the list. Kyle said it was good. Sure, why not?

Smell: Had a strong coffee and chocolate scent. Seems like this porter was heading in the right direction.

Taste: Moderately malty, with a good amount of roast. The chocolate and coffee notes definitely come out here, making a very pleasant mix. There was an ever so slight sweetness to it, that I could not determine. This is supposed to be black cherry. Quite impressive.

Overall, this was a really good beer. It poured a near black, with good light brown head that trailed the glass as you drink it. This 4.5% ABV porter was brewed by RCH Brewery, and I think it was a solid effort. It has a good porter smell and very enjoyable taste. It gets an empty glass award from me.

Old Engine Oil

Why I tried this: I had tried this beer a long time ago when I was up in Savannah at a Scottish pub. As it would turn out, this is a Scottish porter, making it a ripe choice for a rather inebriated me. It wasn't on tap so I decided to get it in bottle and see if it was as good as I had remembered.

Smell: Dark, roasted malts hit the nose, followed by a hint of chocolate, coffee, and fruits that I could not decipher. An overall complex and dark mix. Right up my alley.

Taste: Roasted, malty, chocolaty. Simpy delicious. The beer goes down thick, kind of giving a little credence to the name. The flavor is very rich and enjoyable all the way down.

Overall, I'd give this beer an empty glass rating, because it was honestly just fantastic. The roasted malts and chocolate just make such a nice, strong flavor. The smell complements the flavor by being more of the same. It's thick, and it's just damn good. Strongly recommend!

Fuller's London Porter

Why I tried this: London Porter has long since been a favorite of mine. As far as porters go, this one shines above the rest. I saw it in the beer list at World of Beer, and I haven't had it there yet, so it was a logical choice.

Smell: Smells of earthy roasted malts with coffee overtones. Very nice.

Taste: An explosion of earthy, roasted malts hits you as you begin your sip of this beer. This follows by a slight transition into a chocolate and coffee finish, all the while holding that strong roasted malt flavor. It doesn't let up all the way down. Simply delicious.

On a scale of 1 to 10 I would give this a 9. Hands down, this is the best porter I've ever had. It has a full bodied flavor that never gives when it finishes. Heavy, thick, very roasted, and not for the light hearted who would like a moderate tasting or easy drinking lighter beer. The smell is incredible, the taste more so, and the beer just looks damn sexy in a pint glass. You can't go wrong if you're into dark beers.

I thought this porter was delicious with a robust flavor but well rounded. I will for sure be drinking this plenty more 9/10
